Slippery Elm Bark

Slippery elm, or Ulmus rubra, is a tree native to the central and eastern United States and Ontario, Canada. Native Americans would peel its slimy, red inner bark from twigs and branches and use it as a remedy for many common ailments, like fevers, wounds, and sore throats. When mixed with water, it generates a sticky material known as mucilage, which is therapeutic and soothing to anything it touches.

  • Demulcent - meaning it coats, soothes and lubricates the mucus membranes lining the digestive tract, reducing irritation.
  • Antioxidant effect.
  • Support dogs who suffer from reflux.
  • May help alleviate nausea and vomiting in dogs suffering from non-GI illnesses, such as kidney disease.
  • Contains many nutrients (carbohydrates, protein, fat, ascorbic acid, beta-carotene, calcium, and several trace minerals that support ill dogs,
  • Can be used for both diarrhea and constipation.

Your Vet may recommend giving slippery elm bark at least two hours after taking another medication by mouth. Slippery Elm should be avoided in dogs with an active infection that has an elevated urinary pH, where struvite crystal formation may be a risk.  No to be used in pregnant dogs.
